1970 CHEVELLE SS 396/350

This is the cleanest original restored condition chevelle SS I have seen in a very long time. The picturse may not do this car justice as it is perfect in many ways.

History;
This vehicle has a history of shows and awards. Originally from Texas, the car was restored in 1999, which consisted of mostly paint work. From there, it went to a museum in Florida for 5 years, at which point it was purchased from the museum by the previous owner. This car was also featured on the TV show “American Muscle”

Exterior

Body
This body of the Chevelle is in excellent condition. A complete, high quality refinish was done in 1999. Body is very straight, and rust free. No dings or dents, scratches or noticeable chips. No signs of prior collision damage. Cowl induction hood works flawlessly.

Moldings / Trim
All of the moldings and trim are present and in excellent condition. The wheel openings moldings are worth mentioning, being in near perfect condition.

Drivetrain
The engine is not documented numbers matching, 396 cubic inch 350 horsepower Chevrolet V-8. Transmission is a Turbo 400, floor shifted. Engine is original, and is all stock. Exhaust manifolds and complete exhaust system has been replaced as originally equipped. Rear end is a 12 bolt positraction, with a 4.10:1 gear ratio.

Wheels
Factory Rally wheel and trim rings. Correct dated wheels. Firestone F70x14 tires.

Options
Vehicle is equipped with original am 8 track stereo (working), Air conditioning (converted to R-134, Blows cold), bucket seats, power disk brakes, dual exhaust, tilt steering wheel, and a rare remote controlled left outside mirror.

Summary
The 396 was available in two power options- the L-34 with 350 bhp or the rare L-78 with 375 bhp. Styling changes from 1969 included a beautiful new V grill with bold SS emblem and a cowl induction system that opened in response to engine demand. 49,800 SS 396s were sold along with 3,770 SS 454s.

Comments
1970 saw the introduction of the most powerful Chevelle SS of all time. Responding to the lifting of GM’s ban on engines larger than 400 cid
In midsize cars, Chevrolet responded by dropping in a new 454 cubic engine into its Chevelle SS. The entry level 454 was known as the LS5 and packed 360 bhp. The top engine choice was the LS6 version with 450bhp. The standard Chevelle SS 396 continued with its 402 cid engines, although the 325bhp was dropped and the 350bhp version was now standard.Optional on both the 396 and 454 was a new Cowl-induction hood, which had a rear facing flapper near the base of the windshield to feed air into the engine. The styling was new with a “vee” front end, functional hood pins, and five- spoke Rallye wheels. This was truly the pinnacle of the Chevelle SS performance.

Production
42,682 with the L34 402 V8 350bhp@5200rpm, 415lb-ft@3400rpm.

Value range
Chevelle Super Sports have a wide range in pricing. Condition 2 vehicles are plentiful, given the number produced and the popularity of the car. Values are directly proportional to the horsepower rating and overall condition. Low mileage is also a plus. A big block engine adds 50% or more to the base value of the car. Pricing starts at $3000. for a poor hardtop, to well over $100,000 of the rare 450 hp 454 LS6 engine option.

Value
The appraisal was completed in compliance with Code of Massachusetts Rgulations 211 Chapter 133.05, Determination of values.

Among the factors considered in this valuation include:

• The retail book value for a motor vehicle of Like, Kind and Quality
• The price paid for the vehicle
• The value of improvements
• The actual cost to purchase an available motor vehicle of Like Kind and Quality
• Any decrease in value due to existing damage
• Current auction results and sale prices
• Personal experience of current market conditions
• A personal inspection

It was Robert E. Collins MA ADALB #9476 expert and professional opinion that this vehicle is a Condition #1 vehicle. As such he had determined on 6-29-05 that the value of this vehicle to be $68,000 (Sixty Eight Thousand Dollars)
